We’re Right Here: The Campaign for Community Power
We’re Right Here: The Campaign for Community Power aims to break open the pockets of power and powerlessness which shape modern Britain and drive decision-making downwards and outwards to communities. Because we know from our work that more powerful communities are more connected communities.
At The Cares Family, we know from our work that more powerful communities are more connected communities. That local people are able to tap into community networks in a way that people making decisions on their behalf in distant centres of power simply aren’t. That the nuances of how to build community in a village in Cornwall are known by the people who call that village home – and the details of how disconnection can be dismantled in a town in Nottinghamshire will come from the people in that town in Nottinghamshire.
That’s why we’re helping to drive We’re Right Here: The Campaign for Community Power alongside community leaders from across the country and a number of other campaigning organisations. Our movement is united in believing that, as a nation, we will only overcome the challenges we face if we break open the pockets of power and powerlessness which shape modern Britain and drive decision-making downwards and outwards to communities.
If we are going to create a fairer country, where prosperity is shared rather than concentrated in particular places and among particular people, we have to trust people – those who know and love the places where they live – with the power they need to create a better future.
If we are to come together as a country, we need to protect and build more of the shared spaces and local institutions which knit us together.
And if we’re to ensure everybody can feel truly proud of the place where they live, we need to give communities the rights and resources they need to unleash their area’s potential.
That’s why we’re campaigning for a Community Power Act – a transformative piece of legislation that would fundamentally change where power lies in our country and ensure that local people are able to shape the places where they live.
